Seattle Yacht Club Women’s Group proudly presents the 8th Annual Women’s Boating Skills Weekend, taking place April 10-12, at the Portage Bay Mainstation. This beloved weekend-long educational and social event welcomes 150 women from across the Puget Sound Region, including many SYC members who have been preparing for months to bring this signature Pacific Northwest experience to life.

Highlights

Amazing keynotes, a wide variety of educational workshops, dedicated volunteers, a vendor marketplace and dock crawl Friday evening, a jam-packed Saturday beginning with breakfast and continuing until a plated dinner, a hands-on Sunday event, and so much more. This event is appropriate for new and experienced boaters, and both power and sail boaters. Here's what you can expect.
 

Friday Evening

On Friday evening, we will start check-in and have a Vendor Marketplace. Buy fun items for your boat, art, books on boating, and more! We will have a reception including appetizers and a no-host bar, then join us in a dock crawl aboard some participants' boats.
 

Workshops

Courses will be held on Saturday and Sunday. These include topics such as fishing & crabbing, diesel engine maintenance, provisioning, knots & lines, boating with kids, chartering in Croatia, single-handing, boat ownership basics, and many more!
 

On the Docks

A variety of courses will be held on the docks. Including docking boats and dinghies, boat detailing, and tying up your boat.
 

Enjoy SYC Catered Meals

We will provide appetizers on Friday night, breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, a sandwich and salad bar Saturday afternoon, and a plated dinner Saturday evening.
 

Sunday Afternoon

K&R Electronics will walk through how to select marine electronics for your boat. Limited to 60 participants.

Regan Edwards will be sharing the story of the inaugural NYYC Women's International Championship that is to be held this September in Newport, RI. This regatta is long overdue, deeply meaningful, and the result of a journey you won’t believe. Please join as she shares the story, the event, and a few fun facts about our talent-stacked team, Cascadia Sailing.

Both sessions are FULL | Docking a Twin-Engine Powerboat | PC Pam Lowry | Session participants will practice driving and docking a twin-engine powerboat. Participants will learn how to use the controls to guide the boat.

Summer Cruising in the NW – Let's Get Ready! | Sue Donnell | Learn how to prepare your boat – inside and out, and your crew – people and pets, for summer cruising in the Northwest.

Chartering in Croatia | Angela Krisinger | Learn about chartering a boat in Croatia - from getting there to provisioning - you'll hear about the uniqueness of this region that makes chartering different from traditional chartering locations.

Shopping List and Menu for a Last-Minute Boat Trip | Jodi Olson | One-stop grocery shopping for that last-minute weekend boat trip. Included is a list of ingredients and menu ideas.

How to Buy a Boat | PJ Baker & Kim George | Learn about the basics of buying, selling, and owning a boat.

Both sessions are FULL | Docking Basics: Hands-on | Tracy Goodrich | Session participants will practice driving and docking a powerboat. Participants will learn how to use the controls to guide the boat.

Both sessions are FULL | OK, I made it to the dock - What now? | Carolyn “Ace” Spragg | This class will be taught on the dock with a powerboat and a sailboat to practice with. We'll focus on stepping off safely with the appropriate lines and controlling your vessel's position and movement from the dock. We'll also use a docking spring line to demonstrate using the engine to hold the boat in position. No leaping! No yelling!

Marine Diesel Engines | Meredith Anderson | A quick overview on what to watch out for with marine diesel engines!

Making Boating with Kids Safe and FUN! | Mackenzie MacNeil & Lara Hubert | Nervous about boating with your kiddos? We have some practical and fun ways to make it enjoyable for everyone, based on our experiences on the water.

Mutiny is Not an Option | Jean Carmona, RN BSN | Explore how Non-Violent Communication keeps conflict from capsizing your partnership when stress, fatigue, and decisions hit hard on the water. In this short workshop, you’ll learn practical language tools to stay aligned, heard, and effective – because at sea, teamwork isn’t optional.

From Gig Harbor to Cortes Bay: SYC Outstations | PC Pam Sanford | In this session, we'll explore the SYC Outstations. We'll start at the southernmost Gig Harbor Outstation and end with Cortes Bay in beautiful Desolation Sound, our most northern station. We'll cover the "nuts-n-bolts" of each outstation, navigation tips as well as places to go and things to see around them.

Session 3 has availability; Session 4 is FULL | Hands-on Detailing Tips & Skills | Natalie Yuse | Learn hands-on detailing tips and skills on an actual boat so you can keep your boat clean, shiny and well-protected on your own or in between detail jobs.
 

Owning and Using Your Power Boat Without a Partner | Diane Lander & Jen Sill | Diane and Jen, both single women who own and operate their own power boats, will discuss the process of owning, maintaining, and cruising their own boats without a partner.

It’ll Never Happen to Me; Are you covered like you think you are? | Courtney Wingard | This program will go over what should be in a standard yacht policy and things to look for in coverage from small vessels to large yachts.

Building Hoot! -- a year in the life of DIY boat building | Jenna Miller | This session chronicles the experience of building an 18’ electric launch by hand. We’ll discuss fiber glassing, epoxying, woodworking, CNC machine design and cutting, construction, and more, culminating in a tour of final results on the dock.

Session is FULL | Interior Yacht Detailing | Jodee Winter | The best ways to clean your boat with good products and make your boat shine.

Owning and Using Your Sailboat Without a Partner | Laurie Anna “LA” Kaplan | Come discuss and explore the delights and challenges of being in charge of your own sailboat. Whether the boat is small or big, and whether you are solo, or with a partner and want to play a more active part, learn what’s involved in being an owner and/or a captain and being a capable, confident, independent yachtswoman.
 

Both Sessions are FULL | Dinghy Docking | Peter Keckemet | In this session, we will practice docking in an SYC Boston Whaler. We will discuss tips and tricks for pulling up to the dock in good form, staying safe while docking, and communication with your crew. Participants should be comfortable climbing in and out of the boat to the dock, which may be >2'.

Seattle Police Harbor Patrol | Seattle Police Department | Explain what the Harbor unit does and how we serve the citizens of the city. Walk around on our boat.

Marine Electrical Systems 101 | Jennifer King & Monica Reiss, K&R Electronics | Basic Introduction of marine electrical on recreational boats, including how to troubleshoot and maintain systems safely and effectively.

How to use a VHF Radio | Captain Christine Klimkowski | Learn proper radio terminology, frequencies and etiquette.

How to Crab, Prawn and Salmon Fish around Washington! | Tracy Goodrich | The session will go over basic setup for crabbing, prawning and salmon fishing in WA state. We will also discuss regulations, bait and areas to catch.

Tips and Hints for Provisioning and Meal Planning On Board | Christine Smith | Thoughtful meal planning can transform life aboard. Christine Smith, the chef aboard the M/V David B offers practical tips for provisioning, organizing, and cooking on board, with an emphasis on minimizing waste, using leftovers efficiently, and accommodating dietary needs‚ a few favorite recipes and galley tools to keep meals easy and enjoyable underway.

Session 6 has availability; Session 7 is FULL | Basic Splicing | Dee Bayley | A quick, hands-on introduction to rope splicing for sailors, focused on essential three-strand techniques. Come ready to roll up your sleeves and start splicing.

Marine Surveys: Purchase and Insurance & Yacht Upgrades | Andy Carlson Marine Surveyor SAMS | Reviewing the Marine Survey Process. Yacht standards and adopted regulations for upgrades on vessel systems and structures.
 

Session is FULL, day of availability may occur | Navigating Marine Electronics | K&R Electronics | Experience a detailed overview of marine electronics systems seen on recreational vessels, including their parts and how they integrate together. Learn some installation tips and tricks for those wanting to understand the behind-the-scenes details in how their system is installed, including some hands-on materials and displays.
