Martin T. Crowder, Honorary Life Commodore
1940 ~ 2007
|
Commodore's Letter
Dear SYC Member:
It is with great sadness that I report that we lost our Honorary Life Commodore Saturday when Marty Crowder passed away. Diane was with him and she says he went peacefully.
Marty and Diane have been great contributors of time and effort to Seattle Yacht Club. He served as Commodore in 1999 and continued to be very active on a number of committees. He was always available to anyone to help us understand the history that is so essential to our current decisions. A Celebration of Life for Marty will be held at SYC on Thursday, December 27 at 3:00 p.m.
He was a great guy, a good friend and a terrific role-model for those of us who have followed in the “chairs”.
MARTY, WE WILL MISS ‘YA!
With deep respect and much affection,
Jack Sullivan, Commodore

Powerboat Christmas Dinner
The Powerboat Christmas Dinner, a Seattle Yacht Club festive tradition, was held this past Thursday evening in the Fireside Room. While a brief business meeting was actually conducted among the Powerboat members attending, the real agenda was to gather together and celebrate the holiday cheer with club friends. The excellent dinner finished with a fabulous flaming Christmas desert that was paraded around the room for all to see. The evening was filled with song lead by local piano artist, Primo Kim. The Powerboat Christmas Dinner was a fun evening for all!
The next regularly scheduled Powerboat Dinner Meeting is in February 7. In the meantime, the Power / Sail Christmas Gift Exchange is this Thursday evening (December 13), and on January 16 there will be a special combined Power / Sail dinner highlighting issues with marine insurance.

Children’s Christmas Brunch
The holiday’s are certainly in full gear now! The club was beautifully decorated and full to capacity this past Saturday with anxious children awaiting a chance to meet Santa. Every child (nearly 175 in all) had an opportunity to whisper in Santa’s ear, asking for that special toy that will make Christmas morning the best day of the year. Some older children (i.e. parents) also asked Santa for special gifts on Christmas day too--jewelry and fancy autos seem to top that list. Whether naughty or nice, all of the children came away from the brunch filled with excitement and expectation for a wonderful holiday season.
Linda Emory and Gwen Ellison, co-chairs for the brunch lead an outstanding volunteer effort. Along with Kathy Schwartz, Entertainment Committee Chair, and a supporting cast of many, many volunteers the day was special for everyone. We are truly fortunate to have a membership that makes every one of these events top notch. Finally, our club staff did an outstanding job of managing the demands all 3 floors simultaneously. I hope your children or grandchildren had a chance to be part of this Seattle Yacht Club tradition.

Women's Group Luncheon
Wednesday, December 19, at 11:00 a.m.
December's luncheon is always a very special event with our club decked out in its holiday splendor, the Commodores serving us punch, and an opportunity to have our picture taken with our very own Santa! This is followed by lunch at noon and special holiday entertainment. This year, in the spirit of giving, we are asking that you bring a gift of non-perishable food to donate to Northwest Harvest, or if you prefer, cash or check donations are always welcome.
Northwest Harvest supplies food, without fees of any kind, to over 300 food banks and meal programs, these programs altogether provide over half a million food services to people in need every month. More than half of those served are children and the elderly. Northwest Harvest does not receive any city, county, state or federal funding for operating expenses and relies solely on contributions from individuals, businesses, foundations and other organizations.
