Commodore's Letter

Dear SYC Member:

What a great week at SYC! The biggest and best news is that Carol Eldridge has accepted our offer to become our General Manager. Her experience in both the restaurant business and club management plus her 10+ years at SYC makes her uniquely qualified to manage our Club.

SYC General Manager, Carol Eldridge

My sincere thanks to those who served on the Manager Search Committee and the Manager Review Committee. Your work in writing both the new Position Description and in structuring our offer was oh so helpful. My thanks also to the Board of Trustees who unanimously approved the recommendation of the Manager Review Committee.

My thanks also to the staff for their wonderful support of Carol. They knew what we were going to decide long before we did.

While I am only slightly prejudiced I am delighted with this year’s Christmas decorations. The Christmas at Sea theme came off very well. Way to go Marion!

As it is every year, the Commodore’s Ball was a huge gastronomical and social success. I was very pleased that we were able to salute Honorary Life Commodore Marty Crowder by having Past Admiralette Diane lead the parade of Past Commodores. Marty, Diane we all wish you well.

With the storms we've been experiencing this week, it's a good idea to double check your boats. Make sure your mooring lines are secure, your bilge pumps are keeping ahead of the rain and while you're at it, make sure those pesky muskrats haven't taken shelter anywhere on your boat!

Last week we also had the kick-off meeting of the SYC Fleet Air Wing. The 25-30 wanna be, used to be and current pilots were very interested in getting this effort off the ground, so to speak. Well done Air Marshall Dan Schwartz.

Oh, we also had a Board of Trustees meeting last week where, not only was I not impeached, I wasn’t even yelled at. The people who serve on the Board are truly great contributors to your Club. They all approach every issue by asking what is best for the Club. It is a pleasure and a privilege to work with them.

Finally, your Commodores and their ladies greatly enjoyed the first of the Holiday Banquets. The food, the drinks, the service and the carolers made for a great evening. I believe it is still possible to make reservations for December 22. All the other nights are wait listed but if you call the Front Desk they may be able to slip you in.

Please spend some time this holiday season at the Club. I know you will enjoy yourselves and we will have more fun if you are with us.

All the best,

Jack Sullivan, Commodore

OAR Northwest Visit

OAR's oar

In June, 2006 they broke a record crossing the Atlantic in a row boat! Why? To raise money for the American Lung Association of Washington. Jordan Hanssen, Brad Vickers, Dylan LeValley and Greg Spooner, University of Puget Sound rowers, set out on an adventure of a lifetime in a custom 28’ boat and completed the journey in just 69 days. They said that once the Seattle Yacht Club Foundation agreed to sign on and help sponsor the feat donations came easy. In appreciation, members of Oar Northwest have donated one of their original 12' oars to SYC . The next challenge will be for the Trophy Committee – where to put it!

Special People's Cruise Review

And the rains came and the wind howled…

Odyssey (Santa’s sleigh and the turn boat) headed out to the eastern shore along 520. The wind was so strong they couldn’t get their anchor to hold not to mention the bouncing in 35 knots of wind. They radioed in and suggested that we abandon that plan and change the route, which was done.

The Special People’s buses arrived a little spread out between 2:30 and 4:00 p.m.; one bus and one van short. So we had to, unfortunately, send some of our wonderful skippers and crew home without a cruise…just not enough of the “special” crew. But our guests on the 4 buses and two vans were put on yachts and off they went into the sights and lights of Lake Union. With the wind and the rain, the shortened cruise was OK. They returned to SYC and found Santa waiting for them. Thank you Santa Larry. Santa ho, ho, ho’ed them and gave them their special bag of treats and on their way they went with yet again happy Christmas memories.

The elf’s (thank you volunteers) went on inside to dry off and enjoy warm food and hot toddies. A great job by all!

Women's Group Luncheon

Wednesday, December 19, at 11:00 a.m.

December's luncheon is always a very special event with our club decked out in its holiday splendor, the Commodores serving us punch, and an opportunity to have our picture taken with our very own Santa!  This is followed by lunch at noon and special holiday entertainment.  This year, in the spirit of giving, we are asking that you bring a gift of non-perishable food to donate to Northwest Harvest, or if you prefer, cash or check donations are always welcome.

Northwest Harvest supplies food, without fees of any kind, to over 300 food banks and meal programs, these programs altogether provide over half a million food services to people in need every month. More than half of those served are children and the elderly.  Northwest Harvest does not receive any city, county, state or federal funding for operating expenses and relies solely on contributions from individuals, businesses, foundations and other organizations.

Call the front desk for reservations (206) 325-1000.
