Commodore's Letter

Dear Fellow Member:

The Power Boat Awards Banquet was held this past Friday evening and those in attendance had a grand time. Past Commodore Jack Sullivan was to be the trophy presenter, but as usual, Jack thought I needed “more training” so I did the honors and an honor it truly was. Highlights of the evening were the awarding of the 2008 Power Boat of the Year (Bale Trophy) to Tireless Skipper Rear Commodore Kim Lorenz, the Noon Cannon Award to Captain Dan Schwartz and the Betty Meacham Award to Bonnie Foti. The coveted and prestigious Captain Philip H. Luther Eight-Ball Award went to long time member Joe Collier whose Mo Joe was seen hard aground in the Swinomish Channel proudly flying the Burgee! Fleet Captain Tyler Ellison did a great job as MC, Gerry Johnson presented the Predicted Log Racing Awards and Rear Commodore Kim Lorenz chaired the 8-Ball drama. Big thanks to all who participated.

We had five focus group meetings last week which will help the McMahon Group develop questions for our upcoming membership survey. The survey should be ready for distribution to our membership after January 1 and I wish to thank all of you who took time to participate.

Last Thursday was the first meeting of the 2009 Opening Day Committee. The theme for this year is Wild Wild West and the kick-off meeting was appropriately done in western attire. The meeting was enthusiastically led by Admiral, Neil “The Rifleman” Duncanson; Admiralette, Pam “Miss Kitty” Lowry; and Vice Admiral, John “Hoss” Brennis. What a fun, energetic and great group! There is always room for more members, so if you would like to participate contact “The Rifleman”, ‘Miss Kitty” or “Hoss”.

On a closing note, Larry, Kim and I are really impressed with the way our committees are organizing and getting started on their various activities. The term “hit the road running” sure does apply. No wonder we are TBGDYCITWWW!

Looking forward to seeing you around the club and take care,

Commodore

University Bridge Painting Update

Local Notice to Mariners:

There will be a change in operation and vertical clearance on the south leaf of the University Bridge. Although the change went into effect Friday, November 7 at 7:00 a.m., the Contractor is not working 24/7 yet, therefore when the crews leave at the end of an 8-hour work day, the 4 hour notice will not be necessary, and in addition the Crews will not be working this weekend.

Below is a drawing that illustrates the approximate location and slop of the containment tarp. The tarp will be used on both the North and South spans respectively as work proceeds. That change in vertical clearance is from 42.6 ft. to 36.6 ft the bridge signs are flagged to draw your attention to the change. The tarp and the lines used in their placement are flagged with orange marker flags.

When requesting an appointment call the University Bridge Tower at (206) 684-4765, there is an Operator on site between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., if no answer, call back in a few minutes. After 11:00 p.m. call our Call Out Operator at (206) 386-4251. You may also e-mail your request to university.bridge@seattle.gov  and CC: brownme1@seattle.gov

Thank you in advance for cooperation.

Port Madison Update

This week we only have two projects in process: the railings and the planting. Stacey has done a wonderful job on reporting; therefore I am using his report again.

MEMBERS PLEASE RESIST the temptation to explore the Small Boat Center during construction.
The project is in progress and therefore presents a hazard. We will make it available when it is ready and safe. PLEASE DO NOT PUT YOURSELF OR OTHERS AT RISK.

SYC Port Madison Update 11-3 to 11-7

Port Madison

Railings-We finished the railings in the front of the small boat center that includes the ramp and the front porch leading to the upstairs level. Left to do will be the required hand rails going down the ramp and stairs. I am looking for a hand rail fitting that will withstand the elements and not cost a fortune... We start on the back deck and docks next but were able to get up some of the fascia boards on the back deck between downpours!

Before and after pictures of ramp railings:

Landscaping- The landscapers finished planting the remainder of the plants including the small area developed buy the electrical meter box and also brought in a truck to blow in the final layer of mulch. Monday they are planting over 2000 bulbs of Iris, daffodils, and a couple of other varieties. It should look spectacular this spring. They will complete the final clean up of the silt fences and the like during the week. The landscape architect has scheduled a final inspection meeting for 10 AM Friday November 19.

Storm Drainage -  I had Arness come out and do a modification of the temporary drainage down by the small boat center and also at the street drain down by the club house. Because of the heavy rains of late. this will help eliminate the possibility of silt run off into the bay.

Cheers,
Stacey Wilson

Update:
Docks – It now appears that construction will not begin until the beginning of December. If that date changes, I will send out a memo.
Upper Parking Lot – Still has plants in it, so please use other parking lot.
Clubhouse, Half Way House and Showers – Open for use.
Sports Court and Playground – Closed until further notice.

Chairman Port Madison Committee

Question Mark

Did You Know That?

Paint Bucket

Back in the days of wooden boats, a popular place for meeting your fellow SYC members was The Old Paint Float. Originally it was made of two old cedar logs held together with 2”x 8” cleats and decked over with some old scrap three-quarter plywood. Over time the wood was covered with paint drops from nearly every color of boat paint in moorage.

The float was tightly scheduled with a priority system that included privileges of rank and the nearest rain storm. If you were scheduled for 4 hours on a Saturday morning and only used 2 hours, that quickly developed into a bargaining chip.

Times have changed. The Old Paint Float was replaced by a new dock in the early 80’s and last year that Paint Dock was replaced by an environmentally correct New Work Float. In 2006 our SYC Portage Bay Marina received the highest EnviroStar rating possible and one of a few Yacht Clubs nationally recognized.
