Commodore's Letter

Dear Fellow Member:

Things are really happening around our club. Our many committees are meeting and planning for the 2008-2009 year. On Tuesday afternoon a group got together to kick off the planning for next year’s National Offshore One-design Regatta which is fondly referred to as the NOOD Regatta. This regatta will be held next May and we will again co-sponser with our good friends at Corinthian Yacht Club. Stay tuned, you will be hearing more about the NOOD Regatta.

Speaking of Regattas, we have our Grand Prix Race coming this Friday, Saturday and Sunday (October 31 – November 2). The Grand Prix is our signature race of the season. To be eligible, a boat must have placed in the top three of any one of the recognized races on Puget Sound or British Columbia. You will be hearing more in next week’s Compass News.

On Wednesday our Board of Trustees held their first meeting of our fiscal year. We have a great Board this year and I am looking forward to working with them. Due to the tremendous volatility in the capital markets our Board voted unanimously to put on hold any capital projects not yet contracted for, pending further review by the Finance Committee and Board. Such review will be completed by the December board meeting. Our club is very fortunate to have the fiscal assets that we have and we want to make sure that we manage them in a prudent manner.

On Thursday, the SYC/NYYC Cruise Committee met to start planning next year’s cruise which is planned for the week of August 29 to September 6, 2009. Our Fleet Captain Power, Tyler Ellison and Fleet Captain Sail, Roger Pawley are Co-Chairs of this event.

This past weekend there were about 25 boats loaded with goblins & ghouls for the annual Halloween Party at Port Madison. Approximately 150 people in total had very “scarifying” time. Way to go Dave & Anne Ferguson for organizing this great event.

The new menus are out for the Ward and Marine Room and I have heard many favorable comments about the selections and our restaurants. In fact, business has been brisk and our General Manager, Carol Englizian is encouraging all of us to call the club and give them a heads up if you’re bringing a group of eight or more to the Ward or Marine Room. Thank you for your patronage, it is great to see so many members using our Portage Bay facility.

This is all for now and I’m looking forward to seeing you around the club,

Commodore

Entrix Seminar

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Please reserve the time between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. on Monday November 3 to attend a Seminar presented by Ms. Kim Demuth of Entrix. Entrix is an experienced consulting firm that specializes in the preservation and protection of historic properties.

Ms. Demuth will present information regarding Section 106 of the National Historic Protection Act of 1966 as amended. Her presentation will review the process of negotiation with the Washington State Department of Transportation to preserve the well being of the Seattle Yacht Club before, during and after the State Route 520 Bridge replacement project. This project and the tolling of roadways could threaten the existence of Seattle Yacht Club, as we know it today.

SYC has hired Entrix to guide us through the “mine field” of Section 106 consultation process. You have been identified as a valuable resource to assist the Mainstation Committee through this process of protecting our Club.

Please plan to attend this seminar designed to inform you of this very important effort.

Sincerely,
Fred Roed, Commodore

House Committee Happenings

The Ward Room tableside prepared Caesar Salads are a big hit. This is a great salad! The food is excellent. Try the newly updated menu in the Ward Room!

The new small plates were sampled last Friday and the potato prawns are excellent; so is the lobster cannelloni! The Husky brunches are now the Husky lunches because of the late nature of the Husky games. The menu has changed to reflect the changes.

Last Saturday, great salads, waffle bar, pork spare ribs, smoked salmon and baked salmon, meat balls and polish sausages with all condiments. All of it delicious! With the fortunes of Husky football, there is plenty of SYC parking so come try the lunch whether or not you go to the football game.

Port Madison Update

REMINDER:  PLEASE RESIST THE TEMPTATION TO EXPLORE THE SMALL BOAT CENTER. DO NOT PUT YOURSELF OR OTHERS AT RISK. We will notify you when it is available and safe.

Electrical- Final Inspection on the new underground wiring was approved last Friday for providing power to the small boat center. Now we are in a waiting game with Puget Power to bring power across the road to provide our new service.

Railings- We took advantage of the good weather and put a protective sealer coat on the cedar railings in the sport court area and the one on the retaining wall above the caretakers home.

Plantings- This was the main activity this week as a semi tractor trailer rig delivering the plants and buy the end of the day Friday, 75% of the plants had been planted. Thursday we met with the neighbors across the street and moved some of the trees as to not disrupt their view of Port Madison. I put up fencing around the sport court and playground areas to keep out the little ghosts and goblins that came over for the active intermediate Halloween event. The place looks fantastic!

Halloween Non-Event Event

Spooks and goblins once again took over the Port Madison outstation this weekend at the invitation of the 25+ boats in attendance. The docks were at capacity with sparkling, smoking, screaming vessels designed to entertain the swarm of children trick or treating on the dock. Saturday brought pumpkin carving on the dock while the haunted BBQ took shape followed by a spectacular potluck dinner featuring three types of mushroom risotto and a variety of salads, side and main dishes (we went easy on the deserts given the theme of the event). Kids and adults alike transformed themselves into characters of all kinds in anticipation of a tour of the graveyard, chamber of horrors and tunnel of doom, with a special appearance from a spectral harlequin in the final room. After a brief recovery the troops were ushered to the docks for trick or treating and a well earned rest before a scrumptious pot luck breakfast on Sunday morning.

Photos will be posted to the SYC Phanfare site ASAP and are well worth a peek if you are looking for inspiration for your own haunted event. We would like to thank ALL the attendees who participated since without their help the event wouldn’t happen. Since there is no committee behind the event it relies on the input and contributions of those who come. The food was superb, the entertainment outstanding, the company not to be topped and the overall experience not to be forgotten. Our thanks in particular to those who helped in the galley and helped build the best haunted structure in recent SYC history!

We’ll spook you all again next year…

Question Mark

Did You Know That?

Did you know that the floor of the Marine Room hangs from the rafters? The rafters are in reality a bridge truss and designed by Architectural genius John Graham Sr., SYC Commodore in 1913 and 1929.  When you lean against one of the posts in the Marine Room, you are leaning against one of the floor hangers.

Building Design
Building Design (click image enlarge)

Past Commodore Graham also designed Ford manufacturing buildings throughout the country as well as many of Seattle’s most significant commercial buildings during the first half of the twentieth century.

The Trinity Church, Joshua Green Building, Shurgard Storage (formerly Ford Motor Company) Frederick & Nelson, The Dexter Horton Building, the Exchange Building, Bon Marche, Roosevelt Hotel, Pac Med, and Mary Gates Hall (formerly Physics Hall) are a few of his surviving designs.

Yearbook Updates

Good News for SYC Spouses! Responding to overwhelming demand, in 2009 our yearbook roster will include contact information for both spouses. This week the roster update sheet will be mailed to all members. In addition to changes in member contact info, boat ownership, etc the book will include spouse contacts as well as call signs for those with an amateur radio license. Please take time to check with your spouse to see if he or she would like to have an email or telephone number listed and return the form or email Tanya Treat.
