The Commodores at the Launching Party

Dear SYC Member:

The combined Power/Sail Dinner, featuring Jeff Renner of King TV, was a big success. Jeff is not only a highly trained meteorologist, he is also a boater, a skier, a pilot and a mountain climber - so he knows the kind of information we want from our “weather man.”

Thanks to all of you who came out to the Launching Party. I think everyone had a most enjoyable evening. We have a great group of officers, trustees and committee chairs - all set to do a great job for our Club.

Launching Party

On Saturday, we had our annual Committee Chair Orientation meeting. We had a great turn out and Fred Roed got lots of compliments on running a great show which was completed on time.

Saturday afternoon, your Board had a brief retreat to discuss a number of issues. These “Retreats” are not decision-making sessions, but a time to just talk over the issues with some very meaningful give-and-take. In the recent past, we have held two of these sessions each year. We are looking at doubling the number of these sessions.

This coming week there are several great events that you should try to attend. Tuesday is Rope Yarn North, when the exiles in Skagit County get together and have a great evening. Wednesday is the monthly Women’s Group Luncheon which is always fun and it's even more fun if you join them. Wednesday evening is the New Member Fireside Chat. If you are new members it’s a MUST and if you are an “old hand” it’s a great opportunity to meet some of the new members and welcome them to the BGDYCITWWW.

Thursday Men’s Lunch Emcee is Tom O'Brien and the program is David Shoemaker--Aleutian Spray Incident.

Have FUN!

Jack Sullivan, Commodore

Three SYC members represent well at the
US Olympic Team Trials

As the last day of the 49er Olympic Trials began at Southwestern Yacht Club (in San Diego) on Sunday Morning, the team of Tim Wadlow and Chris Rast needed only to finish one race in better than eighth place to win the trials and earn the spot at the 2008 Olympic games in China. With that in mind, Dalton Bergan (Seattle Yacht Club) and Zack Maxam, who went into the day in second place, set out to hold Tim and Chris back. Unfortunately, the speed of the top three boats was too much. Despite  Dalton causing Tim to start late by chasing him away from the starting area, Tim came back to a second place finish. Morgan Larson, starting the day five points behind Dalton, found Dalton on the second beat and was able to push him back to third.

Tim sailed in - having won the event, but Morgan again went looking for Dalton at the start of the last race. With a slick bail-out and starting on port tack at the boat, Dalton easily lead out to fresh breeze on the right and won the race - earning him second place in the final standings.

Other SYC Olympic hopefuls, Emery Wager and Derrick Vranizan, also sailed well at the Laser Trials in Newport, RI. Finishing sixth and ninth, respectively, these two are just beginning their Olympic programs. Look for them next time, most successful campaigns require a minimum of eight years.

Make sure to congratulate these SYC members when you see them around the club or on the race course. They have worked incredibly hard and represented us well.

Women's Group Luncheon on Wednesday, October 17

Happy 100th birthday to Seattle Children's Hospital!

Please come to the Women's Group Luncheon on Wednesday, October 17, to join in the celebration of a full century of excellence in pioneering pediatric care.   Children's Hospital was founded in 1907 by Anna Clise, whose young son died from inflammatory rheumatism.  Twenty-three women friends joined with her to establish the first facility in the Pacific Northwest to treat children, most of whom would otherwise have been left to endure pain and disability throughout their lives. Many Seattle Yacht Club women have been very active in the support of this fine facility during these one hundred years.

Our speaker, Margaret (Peggy) Habegger, who has received much recognition for her dedicated service to Seattle Children's Hospital, will present a program that will tell us more about the people and events that have shaped this center of excellence in pediatric care and its plans for continued excellence in the future.

Don't miss out on this special birthday celebration.  If you have been one of the thousands of women in the guild and junior guild organizations, or on the staff, or one of the many hospital volunteers, you must share in this celebration.  If not, please help us pay tribute to them.

Call the front desk for reservations.

Annual Powerboat Awards Banquet

Friday, November 2 at 6:00 p.m.

Join us for a terrific evening as we acknowledge those who worked so hard to make 2007 a great year for SYC powerboaters!

We're talking about event chairs, volunteers, exemplary predicted log competitors, great men and women of the sea, Wilson Trophy winners, those who want to be in the spotlight and some who work behind the scenes. And, of course, those who may have mastered the high seas, yet through some unexpected turn of events...had a red-face moment that the boating public somehow knows about.

Be sure to turn in your 8-Ball Nominees for this auspicious event.

Reserve your spot today! (206) 325-1000
