Dear SYC Member:Hearty congratulations to Larry McCarthy, our new Rear Commodore! He is joined by Brian Dow as Treasurer and four new Trustees: Steve Blackbourn, Tom Brown, Day Chapin and Chris Warner. I know I speak for Vice Commodore Fred Roed, Secretary Bob McConnell and the hold over Trustees when I say we are looking forward to working with these new officers and trustees. Thanks to all of you who participated in the election. Wow! What a week! It started in Marseille, a week ago Friday, at the International Council of Yacht Clubs Commodores’ Forum. While Shawn and Chris Otorowski, Marion and I greatly enjoyed meeting and getting to know a fantastic group of like-minded people from around the world, we also came away with several great ideas that can be put to good use at SYC. Monday was used up getting from Marseille to Seattle. Tuesday was devoted to opening mail and deleting e-mail. Wednesday, we had the delayed September Board Meeting which turned out to be the longest of the year.
Thursday, we had the introduction of candidates at Men’s Lunch. Lots and lots of laughs. The laughter continued in the evening, with the traditional roast and toast of the retiring Commodore by the officers and trustees. It was lots of fun, and a fine tribute to Ben. Friday was the Annual Meeting, where we had very little controversy and I had my first opportunity to say those famous words, “Drinks on the Commodore!” In addition to the officer and trustee elections, we also unanimously passed all of the By-Law changes that had been submitted by the Board. Following an eloquent and lengthy description of the recipient's service to Seattle Yacht Club, Ted Shultz was awarded the Carl F. Zecher Perpetual Memorial. The most moving part of the evening was a motion by Barbara Bradshaw-Reid to elect Marty Crowder to the position of Honorary Life Commodore, the highest honor the Club can bestow on a member. The motion passed unanimously and all who were there experienced a great moment in the history of Seattle Yacht Club. Marion and I ended the week Saturday with the Commodore’s Ball at across the Bay at Queen City. It was a fantastic week and I thank you all for the privilege of serving our Club. Remember, its all about FUN,
Jack Sullivan, Commodore Annual Meeting

2008 Opening Day Theme
EPA Discharge Permit: Where are we now?For the last several months, BoatUS has been working to fight the developing EPA discharge permit for “normal operational discharges”, including grey water, deck wash, and engine cooling water from all vessels. Unless there is a change in the court decision, or legislation is passed, this permit system will require that boaters in the U.S. apply and pay for a discharge permit for each of their boats to operate after September 30, 2007. What you can do now: Click here to read more about this and view a sample letter. -Submitted by Kevin Casey , Marine Traffic, Environment & Safety Committee “When All Else Fails…”Wednesday, October 10 What would you do if your phone did not work in an emergency? Walter Cronkite, an avid yachtsman, TV anchorman, and Amateur Radio Operator (KB2GSD) narrates a thought provoking video about emergency communications from the American Radio Relay League (ARRL).
Join us this Wednesday evening at 7:30 pm for a short presentation about the Committee’s programs and activities (including a sample from the upcoming January 12 review class and exam), followed by “When All Else Fails…” video, and then a round table discussion answering the questions: why get an Amateur Radio License?, how do I study?, what is the exam like?, and what radio should I use? The meeting is open to all members and guests. We've already got a lot of new hams in the club - so it's perfect time for you to join in the fun. Also, this is not an adults-only activity. There are many young amateur radio operators in the Puget Sound Region and the number is growing. They have "kids nets" and events established just for kids in 5th grade and up! So Juniors are welcome to this meeting and welcome to study with us to take the exam. A lot of kids study and take the exams with their parents as a great family activity. You are also welcome to attend our monthly committee meeting at 6 pm . We have special guests: Marina Zuetell, N7LSL, and Brian Daly, WB7OML, from Western Washington Medical Services Emergency Communications. We’ll be in the Fireside Lounge so there should be plenty of room.Contact Day Chapin or Chuck Lowry if you have questions or need additional information.
