Vice Commodore Jack Sullivan addressing the crowd at the Powerboat Dinner

Dear SYC Member:

SYC was the honored celebrant at the 115th Birthday Ropeyarn last Thursday, and there were lots of members present to enjoy the birthday cake. Our club has fared remarkably well over the years, and we can all be very proud to be members of and enjoy the significant programs and benefits of TBGDYCITWWW!

The Powerboat Dinner program last Thursday discussed the SR 520 corridor expansion and bridge replacement project. It was presented by Vice Commodore Jack Sullivan and SYC’s 520 Bridge subcommittee consisting of Kip Cramer, Bill Bain, Bob Ranzenbach and Jack Austin. This subcommittee, in conjunction with a similar committee from Queen City Yacht Club, and collectively representing the interests of the Boating & Water Dependant Community, will be a participant in a state-mandated mediation process to find common interests among the many populations that are lobbying to protect their positions. The combined SYC/QCYC efforts have achieved notable success in being recognized as a necessary participant in this process. We appreciate the diligent and patient attention to this issue that is being provided by this group of our members.

Lobster Mania is coming up this next Friday. This usually is a sellout crowd, so make your reservations now. The Amateur Radio Rendezvous is next weekend at Port Madison for all of you short wave buffs.

The 2007 Annual Meeting Notice along with information on the proposed By-Laws amendments and instructions for obtaining absentee ballots has been mailed to voting members. Remember, reservations are required for the Annual Meeting, so please call the Front Desk while this is fresh in your mind.

This week’s Men’s Lunch emcee is Brian Dow and the guest speaker is Greg Ward, CEO of Tacoma-based Aleutian Yachts, who will discuss modern steel hull cruising yachts.

Enjoy your club!

Ben Cozadd, Commodore

Fall Cruise and Snooze

Norwester sailing into first place on Sunday.

The fall Cruise and Snooze was a super success. About 80 attendees in 24 boats with 21 boats racing. Saturday was sunny with a 10-12 knot wind at the start and a max wind of about 14-15 knots with about one foot chop. We sailed the long course both days which is about 11 miles. There were 3 divisions. "A" the go fast boats, "B" the in between boats and "C" the big fat boats.

Winners on Saturday were: Division A, First Shrek, Second Snake Oil, Third Carefree. In Division B, First Gamin (and first over all and with a 91 year old skipper), Second Runaway and Third Mata Hari. In Division C, First was Norwester, Second Galena and Third Panther. The ratings were great as 11-12 boats finished within 90 seconds of one another. The wind died for Panther 100 yards from the finish. Snake Oil, Blue Fin and Carefree were behind us, saw what was happening and went to weather blanketing our wind. All three finished ahead of us. This goes to show that it ain't over till its over. Needless to say I heard all about it at Greenbox.

The wind was a little from the north east, so the west side of the Sound had a little more wind and on Saturday a more favorable current. So boats that beat north on the Bainbridge side picked up a lot of time. We had a great Greenbox and a huge potluck dinner. Kudos go to Mike Milburn who did all the shopping and rated all the boats. Thanks Mike!!

I introduced our new neighbors to the north of the Outstation, Bill and Hillary Price. They bought the Compton property. Nice folks, they participated in the Greenbox, potluck and breakfast the next morning as my guests.

Bruce and Bobbie Campbell, with assistance from Jim Rice, put on a great bacon, eggs and pancake breakfast. Good job guys!!

On Sunday, Denny had the start line in 300 feet of water where there was 15 knots of wind. Sunny and warm, perfect sailboat racing weather. Wind on the course got to 19-20 knots with 2-3 foot wind waves in some places.

Results were: Division A, First Shrek, Second Carefree, Third Starbird, Division B, Mata Hari First, Gamin Second and Toska Third, Division C, Norwester First, Panther Second and Galina Third.

The end of the race was exciting again with a dozen boats finishing within 2 minutes of one another. In order to make the line some boats that were too low had to tack. Boats approaching the line were on port and the boats that had to tack were then on starboard. Well starboard has right of way and there was a lot of quick maneuvers right at the finish. Panther was behind, but stayed high and did not
have to tack at the end of the race thereby passing two other boats in class C right at the finish.

Everyone had a great race both days. Adjustments next time will be to give some time to the boats that are single handed and to lower the ratings of the two boats that got first in class both days.

Sailing 6 months each year, the Hearnes maintain jobs and their lives here while enjoying the sailing season in North and Central America.  This year a dismasting off the Nicaraguan coast and rescued by the Columbian Armada provided less fun than usual!
