Sunset in Tribune Bay (Hornby Island)

Dear SYC Member:

The summer’s organized club cruises are now pleasant memories. Seafair week with all of its many events and activities has wrapped up with the championship hydroplane races and spectacular air shows over Lake Washington. Judging from the many empty slips, many SYC’ers are enjoying the beauty and relaxed pace of August cruising.

So, have a great time! And be safe, courteous – and watch your wake!

See you back at the club!

Enjoy your club!

Ben Cozadd , Commodore

Sunshine Coast Cruise 2007

On Sunday July 29 we all departed Ovens Island at 0800 to catch the slack at Dodd Narrows at 1013 and proceeded to the Nanaimo YC where we all were moored. Green box on Roed Runner. Weather was sunny with brisk northerly winds.

On Monday morning only Roxie, Lightning and Panther departed for Lasqueti Island. It was blowing about 22 knots at Ballenas, blue sky and sunshine. After an hour Roxie had to turn back due to a bent rudder shaft and was hauled, rudder dropped, repaired and reinstalled. Two nights on the hard. Panther had a great sail and anchored in Boat Cove. Starbird had departed Ovens and went straight to Squitty Bay on the south end of Lasqueti and was there Sunday night. Starbird rafted to Panther Monday night and Lightning arrived about an hour later and anchored. Sockeye and Awesome stayed another night in Comox to play golf.

on  Roed Runner and Special F/X.

On Tuesday Starbird, Lightning and Panther had a great sail to Tribune Bay on Hornby where the rest of the fleet joined us in the anchorage. Warm weather, blue sky, wind NW 12-16 knots. Panther rafted to Roed Runner, Celebration and Makala rafted to Special F/X with the rest of the fleet enjoying time alone on their hooks. Green box on Panther. Full moon.

Wednesday we all stayed in Tribune Bay. Roed Runner's gen set would not start so they rafted to Special F/X to charge batteries without running their mains. Fred Roed and Chris Warner tried to get the gen set working but the starter and solenoid were fried. Fred ordered a new one that was flown to Cortes via Kenmore. A gang went for a great hike in the Provencial Park on Hornby led by Lauren Cady and Judy Milburn. This hike is not to be missed if you visit Tribune Bay. The beach is fantastic, a mile long, gently sloping white sand. Green box on Special F/X. I saw a three minute documentary of the Commodores Cruise shot and produced by Ruth Medley of Puffin. Ruth is a junior member and it was fantastic. We will have her show it at the next Sailboat Dinner on September 20 before the Hearne's presentation.

Thursday the fleet motored in calm wind to Comox where the Harbor Authority was able to shoe horn us all in the anchorage. Sunny and hot. Everyone did the town and we had 27 for dinner at Toscano's Italian restaurant. Everyone had a great meal. Green box was on Panther and Lightning.

Friday we motored to Cortes, as the wind was light. Current caused some lumpy seas after clearing the Comox Bar but the water calmed down after Pt. Lazo. Sunny and hot again. We had a huge green box with all the other boats at the outstation. Roxie was a day behind us for the cruise as they only spent one night in Tribune and caught up with us at Cortes.

On Saturday Roed/Warner with tools from Special F/X installed the starter and it worked, much to Karen/Fred's delight and Warner's surprise.

This cruise was a Power/Sail event and it worked out really well with Power and Sail cruising together. A great time was had by all.

Rod and Jill Hearne

Here is what Jill says:

"All the Fun in Half the Time"
Jill and Rod Hearne share highlights of their last 7 years sailing offshore from Seattle south through the Panama Canal to Columbia. Sailing 6 months each year, the Hearnes maintain jobs and their lives here while enjoying the sailing season in North and Central America.  This year a dismasting off the Nicaraguan coast and rescued by the Columbian Armada provided less fun than usual!

Seattle to Gig Harbor
Fall Equinox Regatta

September 22 -23

Seattle Yacht Club invites all sailboats (SYC membership not required) to participate in our annual overnight regatta to Gig Harbor and back. Vessels start on Saturday morning off Shilshole, race in 2 to 3 classes to Gig Harbor, overnight at the SYC outstation, then race back to Seattle on Sunday. Race winners recognized each day. All vessels either raft or anchor at the SYC Gig Harbor outstation.

This family friendly event is popular with racers, racers/cruisers, non-flying sails and double-handed cruisers.
