Commodore's Letter

Dear SYC Member:

There are two berths available on the committee boat (power) for the Norpac event in Barkley Sound.  You could either join for the cruise out and back or drive to Ucluelet in time for the July 20th rendezvous at the Port Alberni Yacht Club.  If you are interested, please call Susan Stillman or myself.

Last week there were two great events that I, for one really enjoyed.  The first was the Opening Day Wrap Up party at Elliott Bay.  We had a great time patting ourselves on the back for a job well done.  The 2009 Trio was introduced – Admiral Neil Duncanson, Admiralette Pam Lowry and Vice Admiral John Brenneis.  They will do a terrific job.

Sunday was the Life Member and Surviving Spouse Cruise.  Who would have thought we would have a lovely sunny afternoon for our historic tour of Lake Washington.  The cruise was followed by a fun dinner with lots of participation in the story telling by those who were there when it all happened.  Jean McTavish and Harry McGuane tied for the longest period of involvement with the Club – 63 years.

Yesterday, Rob Sullivan and I did a tour of the Fisheries facility our next door neighbors at Portage Bay.  Jim Herkelrath the Facilities Manager showed us around and introduced us to one of the biologists who gave us some very good information as to how we might clean up and manage the two ponds at Henry Island.  It was most interesting to see and hear what they are doing today but were both surprised and delighted to learn that the original Fisheries building was designed by none other than John Graham the architect of the Mainstation.

Please keep in mind the All Hands Meeting which will be held on Tuesday June 24th.  We will publish an agenda in next week’s CompassNEWS, but I can tell you it will include a financial update, an explanation of our 20 Year Capital Expense Forecasting Tool and a discussion of the much discussed and little understood minimal modifications to the Port Madison project.

Please keep in mind that the weather will not get worse and it likely will get better.

Have fun,

Commodore

Elliott Bay Parking Rules Have Changed

No longer will your SYC Burgee sticker count as a parking permit at Elliott Bay.  If you do not have moorage at Elliott Bay, you will need to follow the parking rules as posted, or you will get ticket.

If you're going for an event that is 3 hours or less, park in the 3 hour retail parking area, which is in front of Palisades/Maggie's Bluff.

If you will be parking for more than 3 hours, but not overnight, there are approximately 200 Guest Parking spaces on the back row of the parking lot, next to the grassy knoll.  There is no hour limit to these spaces.  If you need to park overnight, you need to visit the Harbormaster to get an overnight parking pass.

If you have any questions, please call the Harbormaster at (206) 285-4817.

Opening Day Wrap-Up Party

2009 Trio
Your 2009 Opening Day Trio:
Admiral Neil Duncanson, Admiralette Pam Lowry and Vice Admiral John Brenneis.

The 2008 Opening Day Trio would like to take this time to thank all of the hundreds of SYC members that worked so diligently on The 3-Ring Circus. We wouldn't have been able to put on such a fabulous event without each and every one of you. It would take two pages to mention everyone individually, but please know that your contributions were greatly appreciated. Thanks also go to the SYC staff who worked long and hard hours during the Opening Day week. We are the BGDYCITWWW because of all of you!

Canadian Flag

Royal Vancouver Yacht Club Invitation to Canada Day June 30 and July 1.

The RVYC has invited SYC members to help them celebrate Canada Day at their Scotts Point outstation in Long Harbor, Saltspring Island. Boats should plan to arrive June 30 around noon or in the early afternoon. Be prepared to anchor in 10 fathoms of water off their outstation. We will raft as appropriate.

If it appears there will be enough room for SYC boats at the Scotts Point outstation after RVYC tallies the attendance of their members then SYC boats will be invited to moor at the outstation. We should know this by the morning of June 30.

The agenda will be forthcoming. In the past their has been a Greenbox organized by SYC the evening of June 30. On Canada Day there is a breakfast of some kind, a chili cook off contest, a land hockey game or a one design sailboat race and a keg of beer the Canadians expect us to help them empty. There is a swimming pool on shore for the kids and adults. This is a great party and a good way to meet our Canadian neighbors. There is about a $30.00 charge per head that will appear on your SYC bill.

Chris Warner and Pam Murray (Panther) have a secret chili recipe provided by Kappy O'Brian that will enable SYC to win the chili cook off.

On July 2 the SYC contingent and many of the RVYC boats will go south to Roche Harbor/Henry Island or the 4th of July festivities. Those wishing to attend Canada Day at Scotts point should sign up at the Front Desk (206) 325-1000.

NorPac Cruise Open to ALL!

July 20-25

Welcome to the wild side of Vancouver Island! There are still a couple of weeks left to register for the NorPac Cruise to Barkley Sound. The cruise is limited to 30 boats, both power and sail, and open to members of other clubs. Racing is done cruiser style with no flying sails.

Participants rendezvous at the Port Alberni Yacht Club station in Robbers Passage for our first night in Barkley Sound. After 4 race days and one lay day, the fleet will dock in the marina at Ucluelet for an awards banquet at Tauca Lea Resort followed by optional extension activities in
Ucluelet and Clayoquot Sound.

Cruise itinerary:
July 19 - Gather in Sooke (optional)
July 20 - Green Box party at Port Alberni Yacht Club
            July 21 - Race #1
July 22 - Race #2 - optional gathering at Eagle Nook Lodge
July 23 - Lay day - potluck dinner ashore
            July 24 - Race #3
July 25 - Race #4 & Awards Banquet at Tauca Lea Resort in Ucluelet

Terrific opportunities for visiting the ocean beaches and other shoreside activities make the Ucluelet area a fun one to visit. A follow-on cruise to Clayoquot and Tofino, just a short hop further up the coast of Vancouver Island will continue for those interested. Once you have cruised to Barkley it makes sense to stay another week and cruise Clayoquot Sound, Flores Island, Hot Springs Cove and Tofino.

Registration:  Please register at the Front Desk at SYC. Registration form is also on the SYC website.
Questions: call Charlie or Susan Stillman, Chairs, (206) 367-0757.

Sunshine Coast Cruise 2008

Cruising Captains: Chris Warner and Pam Murray, contact info, cell:  (206) 782-1277
email: Chris Warner or Skype: sailpanther

This is an EXTREMELY COOL semi official non-event event, meaning there is no charge billed to your SYC account.

This is a SAIL & POWER event. Anchorages selected will be weather dependent and large enough to accommodate all boats safely. You should be prepared to anchor in 10 fathoms of water. We will raft as much as possible.

This Sunshine Coast Cruise begins at the Ganges Outstation on July 28 and ends on the doorstep to Desolation Sound at the SYC outstation on Cortez Island on August 4. The actual cruising schedule is weather dependent. For more information, click here.
