The America's Cup defender, Team Alinghi's boat.

Dear SYC Member:

Your commodores, the Trio and a detail of roughly fifty SYC-ers traveled to Royal Vancouver Yacht Club’s Jericho Clubhouse for their 2007 Opening Day and Sailpast last Friday and Saturday. The welcoming hospitality, elegant food, warm camaraderie and celebration of traditions were greatly enjoyed. Many thanks to Past Commodore Dick and Marol Johnson along with Michael and Kimberly Carrosino for organizing this great weekend. Together with Royal Victoria Yacht Club’s Vice Commodore, I had the privilege of formally delivering Seattle Yacht Club’s Challenge to Royal Vancouver Yacht Club to once again race for the Alexandra Cup this summer. All three clubs will be racing in a nine race round robin series in Martin 242s on July 1, exactly 100 years from the first competition between Royal Van and Seattle Yacht Clubs in 1907. This Challenge will be held in the waters near Royal Van’s Scott Point Offshore Station in Long Harbour on Salt Spring Island near Ganges. Watch for more details to follow, and sign-up now to join the fun at our club’s joint Canada Day party and the Alexandra Cup Challenge, July 1, 2007.

This week is a busy one for members! This afternoon (Tuesday, May 15) is the Ship’s Company Muster / All Hands meeting at 5:00 hours in the Fireside Lounge. This provides a great opportunity for you to ask questions about, and get the latest information on, the financials and operations of your club. The Women’s Group Spring Cruise to Port Madison is on Wednesday. Another highlight this week is the SYC Foundation Auction and Oyster Feed on Thursday. Don’t miss the opportunity to bid on some really great auction items and support the SYC Foundation.

All new members are encouraged to come to the New Member Barbeque at the Elliott Bay Station clubhouse this Sunday, May 20. The BBQ starts at 5:30 p.m., but there is also a cruise to, and a tour of, the Port Madison outstation that will leave from Elliott Bay Marina at 11:45 a.m. Please call the Front Desk for information and sign-ups.

Some of the great SYC annual events are rapidly approaching, so be sure to get these on your calendar and make reservations at the Front Desk: The Golf Rendezvous at Port Madison is on Friday, June 1; the Powerboat Rendezvous is at Port Madison on June 2 -3; the A-I sponsored and organized Scotch & Cigar Party - open to members and guests - is coming up on Saturday, June 9 out on the SYC lawn; and the Lake Washington Cruise and barbeque Picnic - saluting Life and Surviving Spouse members, and open to all members and guests - is on Sunday, June 10. Further out, the Potlatch family weekend is June 15- 17 at Port Madison.

Enjoy your club!

Valencia.  The first day of the Louis Vuitton Semi Finals.  SYC members Dick and Diane Haelsig; Chris and Shawn Otorowski; Craig and Marcia Stuart and Jim and Cheryl Rice have been enjoying the sunny weather and the hospitality of Oracle BMW in the opening day of the Louis Vuitton Semi Finals.  In the first races, in 15 knots of gradient wind, Luna Rossa bested Oracle and Team New Zealand won over Spain.  The America's Cup Port, completely rebuilt and expanded for the America's Cup, is home to some 12 syndicates, 8 of which have now been eliminated with just 4 challengers remaining plus the defender, Alinghi.  The best of nine series will last into next week and is being televised now in the US.  It is a great venue and millions of visitors have already passed through the gates at Port America's Cup.  The event is strongly supported by the Valencia community and the port is a showpiece of civic pride.  Check out your local TV listings here.

2007 Seattle Yacht Club Gourmet Cruise

The Gourmet Cruise is back, and with a passion!! The theme this year is “Northwest Fresh”, inspired by the best culinary cuisine our region has to offer.

Hosted by Tyler & Gwen Ellison and Dave & Gwen Twyver, the cruise promises to deliver a range of dining experiences to suite all tastes. The 7 day cruise includes 2 lay days for individual activities, too.

The cruise begins on July 5 at Poet’s Cove Resort & Spa, and ends at The Aerie Resort, mooring at the Port of Sidney. The schedule is:

July 5 Bedwell Harbor - Poets Cove Resort & Spa
July 6 Ganges – Free day
July 7 Ganges – Hastings House
July 8 Telegraph Harbor – Men’s Green Box Competition
July 9 Nanaimo – The Mahle House in Cedar
July 10 Nanaimo – Free day southbound
July 11 Sidney – The Aerie Resort

The 2007 Gourmet Cruise will cost $30 per person attending. Additionally, the estimated cost of meals will range around $90 per person per dinner for the 3 gourmet events. Each boat is responsible for their own moorage fees. Moorage has been reserved in advance for our cruise. The gourmet dinners will be charged to your SYC account. Extra refreshments will be paid individually at each location.

The maximum number of those participating in the 2007 SYC Gourmet Cruise is 25 boats, or 60 people. We are restricted in size due to the restaurants, as well as moorage space at marinas.

Sunshine Coast Cruise 2007

Cruising Captains: Chris Warner and Pam Murray (206) 782-1277 cell or panther@seanet.com.

This is a Sail and Power event. Anchorages selected will be weather dependent and large enough to accommodate all boats safely. You should be prepared to anchor in 10 fathoms of water. We will raft as much as we can.

The Sunshine Coast Cruise starts after the Commodores Cruise at Ovens Island and ends on the doorstep to Desolation Sound at the SYC outstation on Cortez Island. Weather permitting we will visit places around the Straits of Georgia not usually seen by SYCers. They include Lasqueti Island, Hornby Island, Comox and Savery Island. If you have guests arriving or departing, locations with scheduled commercial air service are Nanaimo and Comox.

The actual cruising schedule is weather dependent. The cruise starts on July 29 more or less as follows:

Day One 7/29: The cruise will start at Ovens Island on Sunday July 29 departing Ovens in time to meet the slack to flood at Dodd Narrows at 10:13 a.m., so an early AM start. We will attempt to get some reciprocal moorage at the Nanaimo YC otherwise we will anchor in the harbor Sunday night. Greenbox on PANTHER.

Day Two 7/30: Depart Nanaimo for Lasqueti, anchor at False Bay or the NE side of the Island at Scottie Bay or in the lee of West Point in Tucker Bay. Explore Lasqueti. Green Box.

Day Three/Four 7/31 & 8/1: Depart Lasqueti for Tribune Bay on Hornby Island. Anchor, swim, hit the white sand beach a mile wide. Green Box. If the weather holds this is easily worth two days.

Day Five 8/2: Depart Hornby for Comox via Baynes Sound. Stay at the Comox Marina. This is a working fishing harbor. Reservations will be made for moorage and dinner in town at the Italian place near the marina. Great food reasonable prices. Explore Comox.

Day Six 8/3: Depart Comox for Savary Island. Anchor. Explore Savary. There is a great beach on the north west side of the island. This is an open anchorage so it is comfortable only in fair weather.

Day Seven 8/4: Depart Savary for the short trip to the SYC outstation at Cortez. Green Box for sure.
