Commodore's Letter
Dear SYC Member:
I want to thank everyone for filling out the comment cards in the Ward Room and Marine Room. Carol Eldridge and I just reviewed the January cards and they were very interesting. 90% were complimentary but there were a few complaints. Atta girls and atta boys will be passed along and we will be making good use of most of the complaints to make your next experience outstandingly good.
A number of people are quite unhappy that the Ward Room menu is not available in the Marine Room. Because we have so little preparation area in the kitchen and every dish must be transported via the dumb waiters, every professional we have talked to has said that we either must limit the menu in the Marine Room or build a new kitchen on the top deck.
Any of you who are going offshore or on an extended voyage should seriously consider participating in the March 15/16 mariners’ medical course. The people putting it on are said to be outstanding. For further details see below.
I understand the Pirate Night last Saturday was a great deal of fun with terrific costumes. Since Marion and I were at the Commodore’s Ball in Tacoma we missed Pirate Night but my sources tell me the wenches were particularly attractive.
This coming Saturday, we are having a Board Retreat where the Trustees and Officers get together to talk about the issues facing the Club. We don’t take any votes because the format is designed so that everyone can make their views known in a non-confrontational atmosphere. If you have an issue that you would like to have on our agenda, please pass it along to VC Fred Roed.
Last Thursday, at Men’s Lunch, the Commodores’ Award for Outstanding Committee Service was given to Guy Harper in recognition of all the outstanding Northwest Indian style signs, benches, and trophies that he has produced and given to the Club. What a guy!
Gentlemen, you have to eat somewhere so why not join us at Men’s Lunch this Thursday? We have a spellbinding speaker our own General Manager, Carol Eldridge.
See you around the Club.
Jack Sullivan, Commodore

Special Men's Lunch Event:
Thursday, February 14, 2008: Tour the University of Washington's Research Vessel Thomas G. Thompson!
Instead of the usual after-lunch speaker program, all Men's Lunch Attendees are invited to the School of Oceanography pier where they will be welcomed on board the University's 274 foot, world-ranging research ship. Capt. Dan Schwartz, Manager of Marine Operations for the
University, and Capt. Phil Smith, the vessel's Master will show you around this unique floating ocean research platform.
While it is about a fifteen minute walk across the Montlake Bridge, and along the Portage Bay waterfront to the pier, we would like volunteer drivers to provide larger vehicles to shuttle over lunch attendees who may prefer or need to ride. There is not enough room on the dock for
more than three or four vehicles, so if you elect to drive over on your own, you'll need to purchase parking from the University gate 6 on Columbia Road, just below the Medical Center. We will ask volunteer drivers, with larger vans or SUVs who can take other members with them,
to identify themselves at lunch -- and parking on the dock by the ship will be provided for the carpoolers. Once the luncheon has adjourned, we will re-assemble at the Oceanography Pier at 1:00 p.m.

Coming to SYC March 15-16: Medical Training for Long-Distance Boaters
Register now! Space is limited, and this is being advertised to general public in the February edition of 48º North.
Practice suturing and IV rehydration on a pork belly while learning all about handling extreme first aid. (This course leads to Red Cross Wilderness First Aid certification.) The course is intended for those interested in acquiring more advanced medical skills to handle remote emergencies. Instructor Dr. Curtis Edwards, MD, FACS is a lifelong sailor, Red Cross instructor, and board certified general and vascular surgeon. SYC members, Behan & Jamie Gifford have taken the course and highly recommend it. They found Dr. Edwards’ delivery to be full of information and very enjoyable. This is a great way to get crew training for the Vic-Maui, too! Click here for details!
