Commodore's Letter

Dear SYC Member:

Navy Sailing had some very good news this week. The two 44-foot training vessels arrived in Seattle after a very extended journey from the Naval Academy in Annapolis. The Committee members, coaches, advisors, and midshipmen have been busy at CSR getting them ready for their return to the water. After a dozen years of borrowed boats, including the very tired Luders yawl, the midshipmen will now be able to train on two very well equipped sloops. Yea Team!

Your Commodore is looking forward to an early sail on the Vigilant or the “new” Lively.

A week from today is the All Hands Meeting where we plan to bring you up to date on the Club financials and other projects. Please bring your questions as the purpose of this meeting is to supply the answers to YOUR questions. Spousal members are very, very welcome.

This Wednesday, 1/16, is the Power Sail dinner with the program devoted to marine insurance. This is only an exciting topic if you have a loss.

Thursday evening, 1/17, will be the second meeting of the 2008 Opening Day Committee. The Trio and Subcommittee Chairs are looking for you to participate. It’s a great way to get acquainted and involved.

Marion and I had dinner Sunday night in the Ward room. No special event, just the two of us together using my birthday card and taking advantage of the $15 wine discount. There was a nice crowd, so we must be doing something right.

Have a great week and see you next Tuesday.

Jack Sullivan, Commodore

South American Laser Championships

Bev on the first day when it was light and she was in second place wearing the recently acquired spray top with burgee.

Bev Elmer attended the Central and South American Laser Championships at Mar del Plata, Argentina last week where she sailed a Laser 4.7. She was the only US participant. Conditions were at times very tough, with winds well into the 20s and what she described as “huge” waves. She captured third place for Junior Feminina (girls) as well as beating all other women and thus she brings home a trophy.

SYC Mini Cruise Review

First 2008 Mini Cruise to Port Madison

Saturday found the fleet in blustery winds from the south 20-25 knots. Bruce and Bobbi Campbell reported surfing to 9 knots with only a head sail up on Evergreen Dream, a 6 knot boat. In attendance
were: the Campbells, Dave and Ann Ferguson with Cameron and Sheridan on Slainte, Chris Warner and Pam Murray on Panther and two new members, Bob and Lynne Swain on Red October and Harry and Barbara Lee on Neenah. Bob and Evalie Berst arrived via land yacht.

Dave, Cameron and Sheridan Ferguson

We all watched the game and like everyone were very disappointed after the first quarter. We had a great greenbox and a super potluck dinner.

Chris Warner and Harry Lee at the Port Madison Outstation

Sunday morning Cameron and Sheridan Ferguson assisted Chris Warner running the Puget Sound Boaters net. Both young ladies, 7 and 10 are studying for their amateur radio technician license. It was a great event and we all enjoyed meeting and getting to know the Swains and the Lees.

It was a motor back to Seattle Sunday afternoon with clear sunny skies and calm winds.

Amateur Radio License Review

A record number of 42 Amateur Radio license exams were given on Saturday the twelfth. Chuck Steward and his team of SYC licensed examiners successfully guided 100% of the new Level 1 examinees in passing that exam. Additionally a number of people passed the higher level exams.  CONGRATULATIONS to all the new licensees!

The discussion topic will be:
"Flying Into Canada, 2008: Cross-Border Operations, Destinations and Facilities."

Customs Procedures and required paperwork - both coming and going-and the differences from border crossing with our boats.... new U.S. Customs regulations on the horizon, including electronic pre-filed crew/passenger lists...dealing with Canadian ATC ... weather forecasting resources available to pilots on the web and through the Canadian FSS system ... Canadian charts, airfield diagrams, approach plates and different symbology ... other issues when operating "up north."

SYC Pilots: please be prepared to share your recent flight experiences up into Canada including:

... favorite (and least-favorite) places/destinations, and amenities ranging from loaner cars to friendly Fly Clubs (like Victoria), optimal places for float-plane operators to make entry, best places to fuel, and safe places to leave an airplane when joining up with your (or a friend's) boat.

We'll also discuss setting up an aviation part of the SYC website and development of an on-going catalog or members' blog to post flight information and opportunities for flight-sharing, training, or familiarization with the many different types of aircraft flown by our group. Boating With Broadband Internet Access Class

Saturday January 26 2008
10:00 a.m. - 12:00 Noon in the Heritage Room

Are you out on the waters in the Pacific Northwest and need fast broadband access to the internet? Do you need to know how to improve your WiFi access to the hotspots available in many marinas and SYC outstations? Do you want to know more about the widely available (and sometimes less difficult to use) broadband access based on 3G (Third Generation) cell phone networks?

If so, then come to this seminar offered by the Internet Committee and learn all you need to know about connecting your laptop or ship’s computer to Wi-Fi and 3G networks. This seminar focuses on a review of the equipment you need on-board to strengthen WiFi signals at marina hotspots and how to configure a shipboard network for optimum performance.

We will also discuss and demonstrate broadband access using EVDO and HSPDA 3G cell phone network technologies. These services, offered by Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, and Telus, offer throughput speeds close to that of WiFi networks, but work over much larger areas.

Coffee will be served. This class is suitable for non-nerds, but assumes some experience with WiFi. Pre-registration is requested. For more details and to sign-up for the seminar, contact Bob Miller.

For those who are having problems with their laptops in utilizing WiFi in the clubhouse, bring in your equipment and we will have a hands-on debugging session between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. I would prefer to work on machines using Windows XP or Windows Vista. If you still are running Windows 98, then it is time to upgrade to new hardware.
