Sunshine Coast Cruise Report- by Chris Warner
The weather was perfect for the Sunshine Coast Cruise. Boats/Crews attending included: Mata Hari with the Walchenbachs Paul, Peter and Trevor plus Wendy Weimer; Aweson with Craig and Marcia Stuart; Enfin with Mike and Judy Milburn; Panther with Chris Warner , Pam Murray , Lauren Cady and Montgomery; Cassis with Dwight and Michele Shaw plus Greg and Brenda; Shatzi with Roger and Lynn Werner plus Bo; Bluefin with Bill and Kathy Cuffel and Summer with Ed and Theresa Bulchis. The course took us from Ovens to Nanaimo where we all moored at the NYC facility. The next leg was to Scottie Bay on Lasqueti where we had a great sail across the Straits. Then we went to Tribune Bay on Hornby and stayed two nights. The bay has a beautiful mile wide white sand beach. The next leg was to Comox where we all got moorage at the Harbor Authority with dinner for 17 at the Italian restaurant Toscanos, good food and very reasonable prices. The next leg was a motor to Cortes in 85 degree weather. We stayed a night at the Cortes outstation and then spent the next night in Squirrel Cove. Some of us hiked to Von Donop. The next two nights were spent in Prideaux Haven with plenty of swimming. Too much fun! From the CommodoreMany of you are still cruising and enjoying a summer of fabulous weather! Bonnie and I are up north again but will be back shortly for business at the Club. The Seafood Fest is happening this week on Wednesday at Cortes. If you are in the area, stop in and enjoy it! September 1st will bring us the first Powerboat Dinner of the fall with the "Blue Peter" being brought to the docks by the Barbos. Sign up at the front desk early; this will be a sellout. Please note that the Portage Bay Clubhouse will be closed on Monday, August 15th for the SYC Employee's Annual Summer Picnic. I hope you are having as great a summer as we are having!

All HandsYesterday the Canadian Fisheries folks intercepted an SYC member claming on the westerly beach at Ovens Island . The fisheries guy, Tom Pawloski, gave the SYC member a formal warning but advised that he could have arrested him. I talked to the Tom today and he indicated the beach has been closed since the early ‘70s because of a marginal sewage system at the band village across the bay. That’s now fixed but water quality tests indicate a continued problem. Tom provided posting signs to the First National Fisheries person, John Elliott, and I’ve asked Brick Bradford to coordinate with him on the posting of closure signs. Info will be posted shortly on our SYC on-line newsletter.

Cruising NotesLarry and Sally Cole want to report on a delightful two days spent on Bowen Island . This often overlooked destination has an all weather harbor, gourmet restaurants and quaint BC charm with lots of green grass and flowers. The small town charm of Bowen Island is a great place to bike, hike and kick back. We stayed at the Union Steamship Company Marina which is owned by SYC life members Rondy and Dorothy Dike. Rondy graciously offers a nice discount since we were flying the SYC burgee. Stop by and check it out.
