McCurdy Cup Regatta Report

August 14-15

In conjunction with Meydenbauer Bay Yacht Club and Sail Sand Point, Seattle Yacht Club is hosted the 2004 McCurdy Cup Team Race. It was held out of Sail Sand Point using 420s provided by the three clubs. The last two years saw a change in the regatta format to include master’s teams with the aim of improving the level of team racing of the younger kids. Unfortunately the two divisions were unable to sail against each other due the time constraint caused by a lack of wind.

The regatta started on Friday evening with a clinic for all participants. There were fifteen people at the clinic which allowed for more focused coaching for those attending. Saturday saw light and shifty winds making the racing very difficult for all teams sailing including the race committee. By the end of the day fifteen races were completed leaving the remaining five races of the round robin for Sunday. Sunday’s racing started off looking very promising with a nice breeze from the South but it was short lived only allowing the remainder of the round robin to be completed before calling the racing for the day. The completion of the round-robin yielded masters and junior division winners. With a record of 4-0 team Old School, made up of Emory Wager, Bart Eland, Anthony Boscolo, Matt Pistay, Michael Karas, Bev Elmer, Doug Gordon and Owen Jones emerged victorious winning the masters division of the event. The real regatta was in the junior division where McCurdy Cup was up for grabs. It was tight sailing that came down the final race in the division between the Sail Sand Point Juniors and the Seattle Yacht Club Juniors. It was a good race but the SSP team seamed to have the upper hand giving them another win and a perfect record at 4-0. The SSP team was made up of Paul Stewart, Kendra Harkens, Nick Hubbard, Taylor Hubbard, Rowan Yerxa, Shannon Donnegan, Kallie Wade, and Chris Fuller. In the end it was a great regatta and everyone is looking forward next year’s event.
