The OneWorld "Road to the Americas Cup"
November 7, 2001 — Seattle, WA. The Seattle based OneWorld Challenge for the 31st Americas Cup has been granted the hull numbers for its two boat campaign and is pleased to announce that the two yachts will be USA 65 and USA 67. The hull of USA 65 is progressing well in the Pacific Northwest and work has begun on USA 67. The boat building team is very pleased with the outcome of their state-of-the-art construction program.
"This has been a wonderful collaborative process that has been more open to new ideas than any campaign I have been on," said one of OneWorlds three lead designers Laurie Davidson. "That will become obvious when you see our boats on the water." Davidson is joined on the design team by Americas Cup veterans Bruce Nelson and Phil Kaiko.
The OneWorld Americas Cup challenger continues to make substantial progress in its bid for the Americas Cup. The sailing team has left its home in Seattle, Washington and returned to the Viaduct Basin in Auckland for another active season of racing and testing. With the new generation Americas Cup yachts under way the design team continues to refine what it believes will be an outstanding contender when racing begins in now just less than a year.
"It feels great to have the guys back on the Hauraki Gulf honing their skills and building a world-class team," said OneWorld CEO Gary Wright. "The whole team has come back to New Zealand well rested, ready to put a 100% of their effort into preparing for the Americas Cup. They are out there pushing on every element of the design and technology, evidenced by our recent broken mast, which we will be repaired and back on the shorebase in two weeks. I couldnt be happier with the outstanding level of teamwork we have achieved."
OneWorlds teams are now split between the sailing operations in Auckland and the design and administrative/marketing groups back home in Seattle. In the Pacific Northwest the graphic design for the boats, shore base and team identity are being finalized with the help of award winning design firm Hornall Anderson (www.hadw.com).
