Active Intermediates

SYC members between the ages of 21 and 40 are represented by the Active Intermediate committee. The committee arranges activities which will introduce this group to other club members and the variety of opportunities offered by SYC. Participation in the Active Intermediate group is a great way to meet other club members, learn about the club and maximize the enjoyment of membership. We are actively seeking input on how to maintain and attract AIs at SYC. Please come and join us and help us make the club a fantastic place to be now and 100 years from now.

AI Events

The Active Intermediates organize some of the favorite events around the club, ranging from parties at the Portage Bay main station to the excellent Halloween non-event at Port Madison. All SYC members are invited to participate in AI events. The AI calendar typically includes the following:

  • Pirate's Ball
  • May Crew Cruise
  • Scotch & Cigar Dinner
  • Fall Beer Tasting
  • Halloween Non-Event at Port Madison
  • Comedy Night
  • AI Rendezvous @ Port Madison Aug. 13-15

Club Sailboat

Curragh (ker-RAH) is a Catalina 25 (a 25' sailboat) that was donated to the club through the generosity of the Curran family in March 2004 with the intention of boosting participation in boating among the AI membership. Many AIs don't have the time and/or money to own their own boat, but Curragh can fill the void. She is designed as a cruiser and can sleep five. She's perfect for a small family, or group of adults for an extended cruise.

Curragh is available for checkout by the membership year round. Reservations are required. AI members have preferential reservation status since the program is geared toward that segment of the club. AIs can reserve the boat for any time period it is available. Non-AI members can reserve up to 48 hours ahead of the desired time. She can be reserved for as long as nine days to allow for extended cruising and participation in SYC events such as the Commodore's Cruise.

Details on Curragh's use can be found in the policy document below. The requirement to pass a certification test has been dropped, though we do ask that if you are unfamiliar with the boat that you schedule a time to have someone give you a tour and/or introduction sail. This can be arranged through the AI Boat Chairman, Matt McGinnis.

The steps to use the boat are as follows:

  1. Make a reservation for the boat at the Front Desk.
  2. Sign the Liability Waiver and return to the Front Desk.
  3. On the day of use, inspect the boat for pre-existing damage, missing equipment, and fuel level. Report anything out of the ordinary in step 4.
  4. Fill out the Check-out/Check-in Form and return to the Front Desk.
  5. Go play.
  6. Upon return, top-off the water, empty the head, clean the boat, and stow equipment. For multi-day cruises you will be expected to return the boat with a full fuel tank as well.
  7. Fill out the Check-out/Check-in Form (again) and return to the Front Desk.
  8. Fill out a Maintenance Request if necessary.
