Ganges is the commercial center of the British Columbia Gulf Islands. The SYC Outstation is located at the northerly head of Ganges Harbour on Saltspring Island, in the Saltspring Marina. Our club’s recent acquisition of a 25% share in the Salt Spring Marina will enable us to develop an outstanding facility in Saltspring’s charming village by the sea.
Saltspring Marina lies just to the North of our former home at Ganges Marina. You can see an overview of the area in the following picture, which shows the Village of Ganges at the top, Ganges Marina in the middle, and Saltspring Marina at the bottom.
2007 will be a year of transition for the SYC Ganges outstation, as we move from our previous home at Ganges Marina to our emerging facility at Saltspring Marina. While our partnership in SSM Ltd has proven to be an excellent arrangement, the physical rebuilding of the marina property has proceeded at a slower pace, due to the required permitting and reviews by both the BC government and the local community. For the next two or three boating seasons, we will have a temporary docking arrangement at the current marina while we work towards our plans for a fully renovated facility.
The temporary moorage plan for 2007 will offer 726’ of moorage, set up as follows:
- Seven slips at 42’ x 20’, plus one at 42' x 18', all of which should accommodate vessels up to about 46’ LOA
- One 60’ x 19’ side-tie
- One 55’ x 20’ side-tie
- One 36’ x 14’ side-tie
- One 28’ x 20’ side tie
- Plus 208’ of side-tie space up to 28’ wide for larger vessels.

Saltspring Marina provides a wide range of services, including fresh water, a pump-out station, garbage service, laundry, showers, and wireless internet on the docks. Power will be limited to 30-amp service for this transition period, but will expand to include 50-amp plugs when the new docks are built. The village of Ganges continues to offer some of the best shopping in the Gulf Islands, and to make your trip to the store easier, the club will be offering free passenger ferry shuttle for members and guests. You can now stock up on fresh food at the Saturday market or the well-stocked Thrifty grocery, visit the BC liquor store, or enjoy a meal at one of the many fine restaurants, with the ferry boat ensuring you an easy ride back to the docks.
